To each JMPhysio patient – past, present, and future
I want to share the philosophy behind my approach as your physiotherapist. My goal is to partner with you in safeguarding your long-term health and mobility, and sometimes that means taking a path that initially requires more time and exploration from both of us. I want to help you understand why I believe this thorough approach is so valuable.
Why a Comprehensive Approach Matters
My passion is helping people move beyond pain. This has led me to focus on a central principle: pain is often complex. What we see on a scan, like a “torn” meniscus or “wear and tear”, can be misleading. These findings are very common and often don’t fully explain why you hurt. While true traumatic injuries are clearer, many pains arise from a more subtle interplay of factors.
Therefore, my commitment is to look beyond the obvious. My assessments examine how you move, searching for underlying issues in strength, control, or capacity that may have allowed the problem to develop. This isn’t about ignoring your pain, but about building a strategy that addresses its root to help prevent it from returning and often eliminates it faster as well.
This method requires careful analysis and open communication. It means we might not have all the answers after just one session, and that’s okay. My role is to guide us through a process of discovery together.
A Partnership in Your Care
Please know that you always have my full permission and encouragement to ask questions. If something is unclear, if you’ve heard a different opinion, or if you’re wondering “why are we looking at this?”, I welcome the conversation. Your understanding and comfort are essential.
I don’t choose a detailed approach to complicate things. A simpler path would be to focus only on the sore spot or the scan finding. But that can lead to persistently treating just the symptom for years to come while the cause remains. My professional dedication is to your sustained well-being, which I believe deserves this deeper look.
This vigilance has proven crucial. By looking thoroughly, we can ensure that what seems like a common issue isn’t something else entirely. It also empowers you with knowledge, turning you into an active, confident participant in your own recovery.
Our Shared Goal
The question that guides me is: “Are we doing what’s needed to support your health for years to come?” When we work together to build a complete picture, we create the strongest plan for your recovery.
My greatest reward is seeing patients who embrace this process find lasting relief and regain control of their active lives. Your trust is what makes this work possible. It is why I am dedicated to understanding your unique story, not just the headline.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your healthcare journey.
Jeanne Marais B.Sc. Physiotherapy (Wits)
When you’re in search of a physiotherapist who prioritises active strategies over passive treatments and self-management over dependency, my approach should align well with your goals. I’m Jeanne Marais, and my practice is built on the belief that understanding your condition and by extension, have the option of actively and independently managing it, lays the foundation for meaningful progress and lasting results.
After graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2008, I gained experience in musculoskeletal rehabilitation across a wide range of conditions, working alongside an orthopaedic surgeon, in outpatient practice, and since 2013, building this practice from the ground up. Since 2020, my clinical framework has been shaped by the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, which is built on a highly reliable assessment and emphasises patient education and empowerment. Rather than relying solely on in-clinic treatments, this method encourages active participation in your own recovery, helping to reduce the number of sessions required while promoting sustained progress.
My training as a physiotherapist naturally includes soft tissue release, dry needling, spinal manipulation, and sports taping, yet I favour strategies that put you in control of your rehabilitation whenever possible. As someone who personally enjoys the likes of rock climbing, running, and endurance horse riding, I understand how disruptive pain can be and how important it is to find sustainable solutions.
If you’re looking for a collaborative approach to recovery and one that values education, active management, and practical problem-solving, let’s work together.
