Chondromalacia patella or runner’s knee is an inflammation underneath the kneecap. This happens when the smooth cartilage on the back surface of the kneecap rubs against the one side of the knee joint, irritating the cartilage and resulting in pain. A very similar but less severe situation is where the rubbing is not yet irritating the cartilage but just the protecting bursa.
The condition may be acute or chronic and often results from bio-mechanical imbalances, overuse, bursitis or poor core stability. The condition may occur in young individuals and those of a more advanced age and especially when taking part in sports. The pain is usually aggravated by prolonged sitting.
In the absence of cartilage damage, the condition can be effectively managed through Physiotherapy. The Physiotherapy treatments may include the RICE principles as well as bio-mechanical corrections, core training and strapping. Surgery is rarely indicated for this condition as the conservative treatments are extremely effective.
